Nigeria Hosts 100 U.S. Military Advisers For Counter-Terrorism Training

Bilateral Defence Engagement Deepens
THE Defence Headquarters has announced that approximately 100 U.S. military personnel have arrived in Nigeria to provide specialised training and technical advisory support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The personnel reportedly landed at Bauchi Airfield with equipment, marking the commencement of a structured bilateral defence cooperation initiative.
Director of Defence Information, Samaila Uba, said the deployment followed a formal request by Nigeria seeking targeted assistance in military training, technical capacity building, and intelligence sharing.
Strengthening Operational Effectiveness
According to the DHQ, the U.S. advisers will focus on enhancing Nigeria’s counter-terrorism capabilities through joint training exercises and intelligence collaboration.
Officials stressed that the American personnel are not combat troops but technical experts operating in advisory roles under Nigeria’s authority and direction.
The cooperation stems from agreements reached during a joint working group engagement between both countries’ defence delegations, aimed at reinforcing strategic security collaboration.
Transparency and National Control
The military high command assured that all activities would be closely coordinated by Nigerian authorities, underscoring that sovereignty and command structures remain fully intact.
Uba reiterated the Armed Forces’ resolve to degrade and ultimately defeat terrorist organisations threatening national security, adding that the public would receive timely information regarding the progress of the partnership.
Observers note that the engagement signals deepening defence ties between Nigeria and the United States at a time when security agencies are intensifying efforts to counter insurgency and protect vulnerable communities across the country.
