Ojei Estate Dispute: Legitimacy Claim Sparks Family Division

Renewed Claims Surface
A succession dispute has emerged within the family of late businessman Chief Nuel Ojei, following allegations questioning the legitimacy of his daughter, Chi-Chi Ojei.
The controversy reportedly stems from claims by Afoma, sister of the deceased, who alleged that Chi-Chi was conceived before Chief Ojei’s marriage to Vivian Ojei. The claims, which resurfaced in February 2026, have intensified disagreements within the family. There has been no independent verification of the allegations, nor has any court ruled on the issue.
Chi-Chi Ojei previously held the position of Executive Director of Finance at Nuel Ojei Holdings. Family sources claim she was dismissed before her father’s death over concerns relating to financial management, though these assertions remain unverified.
Custom, Law and Control
The dispute has widened to include questions over inheritance and estate control. Community sources indicate that Issele-Uku custom recognises the first son, Chuks Ojei, as the family head and principal heir. Reports suggest he has the backing of most siblings, while Chi-Chi is said to be supported by her mother.
Allegations have also surfaced that certain Lagos-based properties and vehicles connected to the late businessman may have been sold despite unresolved inheritance issues. Legal experts warn that selling estate assets without probate or letters of administration could expose parties involved to legal risks if proven.
Observers note that inheritance disputes in Delta State often involve an interplay of customary law, statutory regulations and family consensus. Until the matter is resolved legally or internally, the Ojei estate remains at the centre of a growing family conflict.
