APC Gains Momentum in Delta State
THE All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a major political gain in Delta State following the defection of prominent youth leader, Comrade Ovie Umuakpo, and over 1,000 supporters. The development marks one of the most significant political movements in Isoko North Local Government Area in recent years.
The defection ceremony, held on 4 February at Ovrode, attracted a wide array of party leaders, government officials and grassroots supporters, highlighting the growing influence of the APC within the state’s political landscape.
A Defection with Grassroots Impact
Comrade Umuakpo, a former National President of the Isoko National Youth Assembly (INYA), is widely recognised for his role in youth mobilisation and community engagement. His decision to align with the APC is seen as a major boost to the party’s grassroots appeal, particularly among young people.

Leading the reception of the defectors was the Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, alongside Chief Patrick Ferife, APC Chairman of Ellu/Aradhe/Ovrode Ward 3, and other party stakeholders.
Their presence signalled the party’s recognition of the strategic importance of Umuakpo’s defection and the support base he brings.
Motivation Behind the Political Shift
Explaining his decision, Umuakpo said his defection was motivated by trust and confidence in Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s leadership and governance philosophy.
He described the Governor’s MORE Agenda as people-centred and inclusive, noting that it aligns with his personal values and commitment to community development.
According to him, loyalty to purposeful leadership was a key factor in his decision.
Appeal for Broad-Based Support
Umuakpo called on residents of Isoko North and Deltans across the state to support Governor Oborevwori, whom he described as a leader committed to fairness, unity and development.
He emphasised that political alignment should be guided by the desire to deliver tangible benefits to the people rather than personal or sectional interests.
Assurances from APC Leadership
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Onojaeme assured the defectors of full integration into the APC, stressing that the party operates on the principles of equality and inclusion.
“In this party, whatever is due to one person is due to all,” he said, adding that the APC in Delta State has maintained internal cohesion by carrying members along irrespective of their entry point.
Highlighting Development Achievements
The Commissioner also highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects across the state as evidence of Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to balanced development.
He cited projects in Agbor, Warri and other parts of Delta State, noting that the spread of development reflects the administration’s inclusive governance approach.
Call for Unity and Discipline
Onojaeme urged party members to avoid actions that could create division, stressing the importance of unity and respect for leadership.
According to him, internal discipline remains critical to sustaining the APC’s growing influence in the state.
