Delta Labour Petitions Oborevwori Over PAYE Tax Burden On Workers

Unions Write Governor Over PAYE Deductions
THE organised labour movement in Delta State has written to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, urging him to intervene in the implementation of increased PAYE tax deductions which, according to the unions, have significantly reduced workers’ take-home pay.
The letter, dated 2 February 2026, was jointly signed by leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Senior Public Service Union Congress (SPUC) in the state.
Mounting Tension Among Workers
Labour leaders said the concern became more pronounced following the payment of January 2026 salaries, which revealed the full impact of the new tax regime on workers’ earnings.
They noted that workers had only recently begun to feel relief from the salary increment introduced with the implementation of the new minimum wage in October 2024 before the PAYE deductions took effect.
According to the unions, the development has sparked widespread agitation, with workers besieging union offices and demanding urgent action.
Economic Strain and Productivity Concerns
Organised Labour warned that many workers now struggle to meet basic needs, with net earnings drastically reduced by the tax deductions.
The unions stated that the situation had negatively affected workers’ morale and their ability to perform effectively, stressing that economic stability was essential for a productive workforce.
They, however, acknowledged the financial responsibilities of the state and reaffirmed workers’ commitment to contributing to development through tax payments.
Appeal for Compassionate Implementation
Labour appealed to the governor to ensure that the implementation of the national tax law reflects sensitivity to workers’ welfare.
They urged him to intervene in order to review or moderate the deductions, describing such action as necessary for the overall wellbeing of the state workforce.
Praise for Governor’s Leadership
In the same letter, the unions praised Governor Oborevwori for his prompt payment of salaries and the execution of major infrastructure projects across the state.
They congratulated him on the new year and expressed optimism that his administration would once again demonstrate its pro-worker stance by addressing the PAYE tax concerns raised by organised labour.
