Oborevwori Celebrates Tonlagha @50, Cites Service, Resilience & Community Impact

Governor Commends a Life of Impact
DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Monday described the life of Chairman of Maton Engineering Limited, Mr. Matthew Tonlagha, as a powerful example of service, resilience and generosity, as the businessman marked his 50th birthday with a thanksgiving ceremony in Warri.
The governor said the impressive turnout at the event, which drew guests from within and outside Delta State, reflected a life that has touched many across social, professional and spiritual divides.
Testimonies as Lessons in Perseverance
Addressing the gathering, Oborevwori noted that the testimonies shared during the thanksgiving were lessons worthy of emulation, particularly Tonlagha’s journey through adversity. He recalled that the celebrant lived for a decade unable to walk, describing the experience as a profound test of faith and endurance.
“I am particularly happy for you because I know your story. For ten good years, you could not walk. That is not a small period, but God sustained you and He is still sustaining you,” the governor said, adding that Tonlagha’s commitment to serving humanity had not diminished despite personal challenges.
Unity Beyond Warri
The governor observed that Tonlagha’s goodwill had united people from different parts of the country, noting that the presence of prominent personalities, clergy and community leaders highlighted the celebrant’s broad acceptance.
He also pointed to a novelty football match held between Bayelsa and Delta States in Tonlagha’s honour as further evidence of his influence across state lines.
Peace, Security and Investment Message
Using the occasion to speak on governance, Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace and security in Delta State, describing peace as the foundation of sustainable development.
According to him, peace is being achieved through collaboration between security agencies, host communities and government-led engagement programmes that provide productive opportunities for youths.
“Anyone who makes money from this state should invest in this state. This land is good,” the governor said, assuring investors of safety and stability.
Family and Faith Acknowledged
The governor paid special tribute to Tonlagha’s wife, describing her as a steadfast partner who stood by her husband through difficult periods. He also acknowledged the roles played by the celebrant’s mother and mother-in-law, offering prayers for continued blessings upon them.
A Sermon on a Worthy Life
Delivering the sermon, Pastor Emmanuel Kalejaiye, Continental Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God for South-West Nigeria and the Middle East, spoke on the theme “A Worthy Life,” drawn from Psalm 90:12. He described a worthy life as one rooted in reverence for God and service to humanity, noting that thanksgiving reflects gratitude expressed through both words and conduct.
Tonlagha’s Gratitude
In his remarks, Tonlagha thanked God for the grace to attain 50 years, describing himself as a beneficiary of divine mercy. He paid tribute to his mother, whom he described as his pillar of strength, and to his wife, highlighting mutual understanding and counsel as the foundation of their marriage.
The ceremony concluded with the celebrant leading the congregation in seven hallelujahs, expressing gratitude to God for victory over life’s challenges, including polio.
