Renewable Energy Push: Asaba Kingdom Eyes Solar Transformation

Asaba Monarch Pushes Renewable Energy Drive with REA Solar Street Light Request
Strategic Meeting in Abuja
HIS Royal Majesty, Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN), the Asagba of Asaba, has called for the deployment of 2,000 solar street lights across Asaba Kingdom, citing security enhancement, economic growth, and sustainable urban development as key motivations.
The request was presented during an official audience with the Executive Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and Rural Electrification Fund, Rt. Hon. Engr. Doris Uboh, at the monarch’s Abuja residence on 29 January 2026.
Endorsement of Federal Appointment
The Asagba used the occasion to congratulate Engr. Uboh on her appointment, commending the Federal Government for selecting a professional with legislative experience and technical expertise.
Describing her appointment as well-deserved, the monarch expressed optimism that her leadership would translate into tangible improvements in rural and semi-urban electrification across Nigeria.
Lighting Asaba for Safety and Growth
According to the monarch, the proposed solar street lights would play a critical role in improving safety across major roads, residential areas, and commercial districts within Asaba Kingdom.
He stressed that better illumination would deter criminal activity, support night-time commerce, and enhance the quality of life for residents.
“This intervention will bring lasting economic and security benefits to our people,” the Asagba said, noting that the impact would be felt across generations.
REA’s Vision for Nationwide Access
Responding, Engr. Uboh praised the Asagba’s leadership and vision, describing Asaba as a progressive community well-positioned to benefit from renewable energy initiatives.
She explained that the Tinubu administration has prioritised energy access as a catalyst for development, with solar solutions forming a major pillar of the national electrification strategy.
Engr. Uboh assured the monarch that the agency would work to address Asaba’s request promptly, in line with REA’s mandate to expand sustainable power solutions.
Cultural Diplomacy and Appreciation
The visit also featured cultural exchanges, including the presentation of gifts by the Asaba community to Engr. Uboh, reinforcing ties between traditional leadership and federal development institutions.
