AEDC Restores Power To FCT Water Board After Public Outcry

AEDC Restores Power After Water Disruption Sparks Public Outcry
ABUJA Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) has restored electricity supply to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Water Board following widespread complaints over disruptions to water supply in parts of Abuja.
The power distributor said the reconnection was ordered after appeals from residents and stakeholders who expressed concern over the public health implications of prolonged water shortages.
Reason for Disconnection
In a statement issued by its Head of Brand Marketing and Corporate Communications, Mr. Omede Odekina, AEDC explained that the earlier disconnection resulted from more than one year of unpaid electricity bills by the FCT Water Board.
According to the company, repeated notices, engagements and opportunities were offered to the agency to regularise its account in line with existing regulatory provisions, but the debts remained unsettled.
Public Health Considerations
AEDC said the Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, directed the immediate restoration of power in recognition of the essential role water supply plays in public health and community wellbeing.
“The decision was taken to enable the prompt resumption of water services across affected areas of the FCT,” the company stated, adding that access to essential services must be safeguarded.
Conditional Reconnection
However, AEDC stressed that the reconnection was conditional. The company disclosed that it has given the FCT Water Board a two-week ultimatum to submit and begin implementing a credible payment plan to address its outstanding electricity debt.
Failure to comply, AEDC warned, could result in another disconnection in line with regulatory guidelines.
The power distributor reaffirmed that disconnection remains a last resort and pledged continued engagement to ensure sustainable electricity supply in the FCT.
