Cross River Discovers Sporting Gems at Niger Delta Games Trials
CROSS River State has recorded a major breakthrough in identifying new sporting talents during the recently concluded state trials for the 2nd Niger Delta Games. The trials, held in the Central Senatorial District, aimed to select athletes for the state finals ahead of the main Games.
Lawrence Etta, Head of Media and Publicity for the state liaison committee, described the trials as a “remarkable success” in uncovering raw abilities among young athletes. Many participants, particularly from rural communities, were exposed to organised sports for the first time, giving them a chance to showcase their talents and interact with peers from other areas.
Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Co-Chairman of the main organising committee, emphasized that the Games provide a platform for hinterland youths to compete, develop their skills, and potentially rise to national and international prominence.
The initiative has drawn praise from community leaders, athletes, and sports stakeholders, commending the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dunamis-Icon Limited, and the Cross River Government for championing youth empowerment through sports.
