Osimhen Leads Super Eagles Into AFCON Semifinals After Algeria Win
THE Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a place in the semifinals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a composed 2–0 victory over Algeria at the Marrakech Stadium on Friday night.
After a tightly contested first half, Nigeria took control shortly after the restart as Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams struck decisive second-half goals to break Algerian resistance. The result was sealed in front of 32,465 spectators, with Nigeria displaying discipline, tactical organisation and clinical finishing.
Osimhen emerged as the standout performer, leading the line with relentless intensity and opening the scoring with a well-taken finish. Akor Adams doubled Nigeria’s advantage soon after, capping an impressive outing that saw him trouble the Algerian defence throughout.
Defensively, Calvin Bassey delivered a commanding display, earning high praise for his physical presence and positional awareness. Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi provided creativity and control in midfield, while Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka ensured balance and defensive cover.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali had a relatively quiet night but remained assured when called upon. Late substitutions, including the introduction of Dele Bashiru and Chidozie, helped Nigeria manage the closing stages comfortably.
The Super Eagles will now face tournament hosts Morocco in the semifinal clash at the Rabat Stadium.
