THE Hausa Ethnic Organization of Nigeria recently met with the descendants of Sultan Muhammadu Alwali II, the last Hausa Sultan of Kano, in a ceremony reflecting historical remembrance and cultural solidarity. Sultan Alwali II, who was killed by Fulani rebels despite their proclaimed jihad, is remembered as a devout Muslim and custodian of Hausa traditions.
The meeting provided an opportunity for members of the Hausa community to pay tribute to the Sultan’s legacy, recalling his commitment to Islam and his efforts to eradicate idolatrous practices, such as the destruction of ‘Dirka.’ Historical accounts from Kano State Radio describe how Sultan Alwali II, in the final moments before his death at Burun Burun, affirmed his faith and leadership, proclaiming adherence to Allah and the Prophet, and defending his religious and political reforms.
Delegates emphasized the significance of preserving the memory of Hausa rulership in Kano, ensuring that future generations understand the sacrifices of their forebears. The gathering also underscored ongoing discussions around Hausa identity, historical continuity, and reconciliation with the historical legacy of inter-ethnic conflicts.
