NSCDC Intensifies Festive Security Across Delta State
Yuletide Security Surge
AS Christmas and New Year celebrations approach, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Delta State has launched an unprecedented security operation, deploying 1,293 officers across the state. The deployment, directed by Commandant Chinedu Igbo, reflects heightened concerns over public safety and the protection of critical national assets during the festive season.
Specialised Units in Action
The operation mobilises personnel from multiple specialised units, including the Armed Squad, Counter-Terrorism Unit, Anti-Vandal Unit, Disaster Management Unit, and Tactical teams. According to NSCDC spokesperson Anthony Uchenna, the deployment aims to provide “watertight security” before, during, and after the Yuletide, combining conventional patrols with rapid response strategies.
Focus on Critical Assets
Particular attention has been given to protecting Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI), such as oil and gas installations, and the First and Second Niger Bridges, whose disruption could trigger serious economic and social consequences. Female Squad teams have also been assigned routine patrol duties in major towns, reflecting a more community-focused approach to security.
Public Safety and Collaboration
Commandant Igbo emphasised that the Corps will work closely with sister security agencies to curb armed robbery, vandalism, and other festive-period crimes. Residents were urged to celebrate without fear but remain vigilant, as the operation also signals ongoing challenges in safeguarding infrastructure and public spaces.
Analysis
Experts note that large-scale deployments during the festive season are often reactive, addressing predictable spikes in criminal activity. While the NSCDC’s operation demonstrates proactive planning, the persistent vulnerability of key infrastructure highlights the need for long-term investment in security systems, technology, and inter-agency coordination beyond seasonal interventions.
